Destination 1: Hiking Acatenango
Hiking Acatenango is an incredible adventure that offers stunning views of Guatemala’s most famous volcanoes: Acatenango and Fuego. At more than 13,000 feet above sea level, this challenging hike promises exciting moments and unforgettable views of volcanic activity.
Preparation and Planning:
Before you start the hike, it’s important to get ready properly. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Check the weather: Make sure you know what to expect by checking the forecast beforehand.
- Get the right gear: Wear sturdy hiking boots, dress in layers to stay warm, and bring essential items like a headlamp, enough water, and snacks.
- Physical fitness: Since this is a tough hike, it’s best to be in good shape and try to get used to the high altitude if you can.
Choosing a Tour Operator:
While it’s possible to hike Acatenango on your own, many people prefer joining a guided tour for convenience and safety. One recommended tour operator is V-Hiking Tours (v-hiking.tours.com). Their experienced guides not only ensure your safety but also share interesting information about the local plants, animals, and geological formations you’ll encounter along the way.
The Hiking Experience:
The hike typically starts early in the morning to reach the campsite before sunset, so be ready for an early start. As you climb the rough terrain, you’ll pass through dense forests, steep slopes, and volcanic areas, all while enjoying amazing views of the surrounding land. Along the way, your guide will take you to designated rest stops where you can take a break and recharge with snacks and water.

Camping at Base Camp:
Once you reach the base camp near the top, you’ll set up camp and take a well-deserved break before the best part of the trip: seeing the incredible eruptions of Volcano Fuego. When night comes, the fiery display of Fuego’s lava eruptions lights up the sky, creating a surreal and unforgettable experience.
Sunrise Summit:
The next morning, wake up early to make the final climb to the top of Acatenango in time for sunrise. The wide-ranging views from the peak are absolutely amazing, offering expansive sights of nearby volcanoes, green valleys, and far-off mountain ranges. Capture the beauty of the sunrise as it colors the sky in shades of orange and pink, casting a golden glow over the rough land below.
Descent and Return:
After enjoying the sunrise show, start making your way back down to the base camp and eventually to where you started. The journey back gives you time to think about the incredible experience and admire the impressive power and beauty of Guatemala’s volcanic scenery.
