This city is a dream destination for anyone, situated on the banks of the Nile River. Often dubbed the “world’s greatest open-air museum,” Luxor entices solo travelers with its rich past and majestic monuments.

Luxor Egypt offers something for every budget and interest!

A Brief History of Luxor, Egypt

Most travelers are familiar with Cairo, Egypt’s modern capital city and home to the pyramids. But Luxor holds its own as the original capital of ancient Egypt, dating back to 1070 BCE.

Luxor was once home to powerful pharaohs like Ramses II and Tutankhamun. It was also a major religious center, particularly for the worship of Amun, which you’ll see when you visit the grand temples of Karnak and Luxor.

Today, Luxor, Egypt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its museums and well-preserved historical sites. It has the appeal of Cairo but with fewer crowds!

How to Get to and Around Luxor Egypt

If you’re planning to fly, I suggest landing in Cairo and taking a connecting flight to Luxor International Airport.

Luxor International Airport connects to most major cities in Egypt, but it’s easiest to find connecting flights in Cairo. Plus, Cairo is the most tourist-friendly city to fly into.

You could also take a sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor, which will take you about 10 hours. However, it’s more budget-friendly (and much more comfortable) to just book the 90-minute connecting flight from Cairo to Luxor.

Once you’re in Luxor, all the attractions you’ll be frequenting in the city are within a small vicinity. If your hotel is near the attractions you’re interested in, you can easily get around on foot or rent a bicycle.

There’s no Uber in Luxor, but taxis are one of the best ways to get around the city. Check with your hotel front desk to book or just flag one down outside.

You can also book a car and guide through your hotel if it’s within your budget.

If you’re feeling adventurous, microbuses are cheap and easy to use, allowing you to hop on and off at your desired destination. Caleches (horse-drawn carriages) are another fun alternative to taxis and buses.

And if you’re crossing the Nile to explore the West Bank, public ferries and feluccas (sailboats that take you a bit further) are easily accessible and affordable.

Here I am, sitting casually on the base of a carved stone column inside a historic temple in Luxor, Egypt. The column and surrounding walls are covered with intricate Egyptian hieroglyphs. I’m wearing sunglasses, a scarf, and casual clothing, ideal for a comfortable day exploring Luxor.

Why Luxor is Perfect for Solo Female Travelers

It’s Safe

This was my initial concern when I started researching. However, contrary to common misconceptions, Luxor, Egypt is considered safe for solo female travelers.

The locals are used to tourists and are generally welcoming and respectful. But, as with any destination, it’s always wise to exercise caution, respect local customs, and dress modestly.

One way that I exercised caution was to hire a guide and driver to take me to all the spots I wanted. Thanks, Airbnb experiences!

It’s Budget-Friendly

Luxor also offers various accommodation and dining options that cater to both luxury seekers and those on a tight budget.

Staying in guesthouses or budget hotels can be an economical way to experience authentic Egyptian hospitality.

I decided to splurge and stay at the Hilton Luxor Resort and Spa. Let’s just say it was a nice little change from the hostels I had been staying in for the weeks prior.

And quite frankly, for the cost of what you get, I felt spoiled. 10 outa 10!

Luxor is Easy to Navigate

The primary attractions in Luxor are conveniently located close together. You can easily explore on foot, by bike, or by taking a local caleche (horse-drawn carriage).

But as I mentioned before, I utilized the experiences tab on Airbnb. I was able to have a private guide and driver all to myself!

Must-Visit Luxor Attractions

The sheer volume of historical sites available to you in this stunning city makes it a veritable playground for history lovers! Here are the most popular things to do in Luxor, Egypt.

Valley of the Kings

A short trip across the Nile takes you to the Valley of the Kings. This royal burial ground is home to over 60 tombs, including those of famed pharaohs like Tutankhamun.

I started out early with my guide, and this was our first stop of the day. It was definitely cooler and less crowded during that time, making it a much more enjoyable experience!

If you’re interested in a private Luxor Valley of the Kings tour, this one is a great full-day option. You’ll also get to visit other must-see sites, including the stunning Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Hatshepsut.

Temple of Karnak

The Temple of Karnak is a sprawling temple complex dedicated to the god Amun. And it’s a testament to Luxor’s grandeur during the New Kingdom era.

As you wander through its colossal columns and intricately carved chapels, you can’t help but feel transported back in time.

Plus, seeing how well-preserved and bright some of the original colors are will leave you in awe.

Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple is one of the most popular attractions for those visiting the city because it’s the best-preserved ancient Egyptian monument.

You’ll love admiring the beautiful statues and seeing the unique relief carvings, unlike anything you’ve seen elsewhere.

If you can, I highly recommend timing your visit here for the evening! After the sun goes down, it’s lit up with spotlights, making for a breathtaking experience.

I was told it’s also less crowded in the evenings, so you’ll have more time and space to take everything in.

Personally, when I visited in November, I found it a little crowded. Regardless, it is still an amazing wonder to see!

Medinet Habu

This lesser-known mortuary temple found on the outskirts of the city of Luxor is a hidden gem. And it’s often tacked onto the end of guided tours of more popular sites.

The Medinet Habu is worth its own visit. It’s absolutely beautiful and boasts quite a lot of intricate reliefs and bright colors. You’ll want to spend your time observing the detailed work here.

Thankfully, this temple isn’t crowded, offering a quieter atmosphere than other places you’ll visit.

Temple of Hatshepsut

The Temple of Hatshepsut was one of my favorite places in Luxor, not just for its beauty but for its history.

I won’t spoil the back story, but it includes an exciting story of an empowered woman who worked to defy the odds in the male-dominated era.

Make sure to add this temple to your itinerary!

Colossi of Memnon

Standing over 60 feet tall on Luxor’s West Bank, the Colossi of Memnon is an essential stop for those interested in the oldest history of ancient Egypt.

Set against the expansive desert, the site also makes for an excellent photo spot!

The 2 towering statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III are iconic remnants of what was once a grand mortuary temple, though much about the site is shrouded in mystery.

Luxor Museum

When landmark fatigue sets in, enjoy a change of pace with a visit to the Luxor Museum set on the banks of the Nile.

It’s a small history museum that takes about an hour to go through, while also offering a beautiful glimpse into ancient Egyptian history. Highlights include treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb and the mummy of Ramses I.

This museum is beautifully curated and less crowded than larger museums. Just keep in mind that they close from 2-5 PM daily!

Shop the Luxor Souk

A souk is a bustling, open-air marketplace found in many Middle Eastern and North African cities. The Luxor Souk is an essential visit for anyone interested in experiencing authentic Luxor and picking up souvenirs.

Keep in mind, this is not a market geared towards tourists. It’s a fruit and vegetable market where locals shop. But it’s an excellent location to find handmade goods, spices, jewelry, textiles, and more.

You can pick up lunch here or haggle with vendors for the best price (which is part of the fun!) on souvenirs like alabaster statues, Egyptian textiles, and more.

Take a Nile River Cruise

If you’re a fan of river cruises, the one from Luxor to Aswan is a must! It’s one of the most popular things to do in Luxor, Egypt.

There are dozens of options at every price range, depending on the experience you want. This mid-range 4-day Luxor and Aswan Nile cruise is a great choice, with a fully-planned itinerary.

You could also go higher in price for a cozier cabin or book a local cruise with just the basic if you prefer to keep things more DIY.

Not feeling a 4-day excursion? You could also book a private felucca ride along the Nile River. It’s a wonderful way to take in the scenic views from the water in just a few hours.

Where to Stay in Luxor, Egypt

I already mentioned that I stayed at the Hilton Luxor Resort and Spa and absolutely loved the experience. If you want to splurge on a luxury resort, I recommend this one!

When you’re a solo female traveler in an unfamiliar country and culture, staying at a highly-rated hotel can give you a lot of peace of mind. Plus, for the price you pay even for the best, you feel like you’re getting a steal.

A few of other excellent options for high-end hotels in downtown Luxor include the riverfront Sonesta St. George and the stunning Al Moudira Hotel.

For something more mid-range, go with Malkata House, a boutique hotel featuring full apartments, private gardens, and a restaurant.

And Nefertiti Hotel Luxor is an excellent budget-range hotel that offers guests a variety of perks and an authentic Luxor experience.

Tips for the Solo Female Traveler in Luxor

Concerned about safety and comfort as a woman traveling alone in Egypt? With a little planning, you’ll have the time of your life! Here are my best tips:

  • Dress Modestly: While Luxor is tourist-friendly, dressing conservatively helps in avoiding unwanted attention. Lightweight, long-sleeved tops, and maxi skirts or trousers are ideal.
  • Stay Hydrated: The Egyptian sun can be unforgiving. Always carry a water bottle, wear a hat, and regularly apply sunscreen.
  • Bargain Wisely: Whether shopping for souvenirs in the local bazaar or taking a caleche ride, haggling is an art and part of the Egyptian shopping experience. But remember to do it with a smile!
  • Local Cuisine: Don’t miss out on traditional Egyptian dishes like ‘koshary’ or ‘molokhia’. Many local eateries offer these delectable meals at pocket-friendly prices.
  • Stay Connected: A local SIM card can be a lifesaver, ensuring you’re always connected. This can be especially useful when navigating or in case of emergencies. However, if you have T-Mobile, you can rest easy knowing that you will still be connected once you land.
  • Respect Local Culture: While Egyptians are warm and friendly, respecting their customs is essential. A polite “no, thank you” is usually enough to decline unwanted offers or attention.
