Below I’ve shared some of my favorite August destinations for fun under the sun. Plus, I’ve included my suggestions for where to stay at each destination, with highly-rated lodgings for every budget.
1. Seychelles
A lesser-known gem, Seychelles is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean offering a mix of relaxation and adventure, perfect for the solo traveler.
One of the best places to go in August, this paradise is known for its warm, sunny weather, gorgeous beaches, turquoise waters, and coral reefs.
One of the highlights of Seychelles is island hopping. You can visit islands like Praslin, La Digue, and more. Each one has its own unique charm!
And diving or snorkeling around the coral reefs is a must. It’s a great spot to see vibrant fish, sea turtles, and more. This full-day tour is a great choice for island hopping and snorkeling the reefs.
When it’s time to relax, head to Anse Source d’Argent, one of the most photographed beaches in the world. It’s truly a breathtaking beach that you’ll want to see for yourself, with its powdery white sand and dramatic granite boulders.
If you’re in the mood for an active escape, hike through Morne Seychellois National Park. The trails take you through lush forests, with panoramic views over the islands as your reward!

Falling in the middle of the country’s dry season, August is the perfect time for outdoor adventures and beach relaxation! Just be prepared: This is high season in Bali, meaning more visitors and higher prices.
Despite the crowds, travelers from around the world are drawn here for the island’s mix of relaxation, culture, and adventure.
You can unwind at one of Bali’s famous yoga retreats or simply lounge on the beach, cocktail in hand! I can’t say enough about this beautiful place. The one negative from my experience in Bali was the dreaded Bali Belly that I contracted on my first day here!
If you’re looking to dive into the local culture, take an Ubud cooking class at a local cooking school. Get immersed in Balinese cuisine, learning how to prepare traditional dishes.
For a more adventurous experience, go scuba diving around Tulamben or Nusa Penida to see vibrant coral reefs and incredible marine life. Or wander through the lush Tegallalang Rice Terraces, one of Bali’s most iconic landscapes.
For a quieter, scenic option, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is an easy and scenic walk offering a peaceful escape just outside of Ubud. And you can’t beat the sweeping views of Bali’s hillsides.

4. Tulum, Mexico
Ancient ruins overlooking the turquoise sea, boho-chic eateries, and secluded beaches make Tulum an irresistible summer haven.
You can dive into hidden cenotes, visit local artisan markets, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife, all while soaking up the last of the summer rays. For me, this destination was incredible!
I also recommend planning a beach day at Tulum Beach. The white sand and azure waters make it the perfect place to relax, read, and soak in the beauty around you.
Or explore downtown Tulum on a street art tour in downtown Tulum! The art murals here only add a colorful touch to the town’s relaxed atmosphere.
Keep in mind that August is considered a shoulder season due to hurricane season. However, this means lower rates and fewer crowds if you’re willing to risk some rain! For many, this makes Tulum one of the good places to visit in August.
Pro tip: From the city, you can easily rent a bike and ride along the beachfront. Just go early as the roads are small and traffic is the worst!

5. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is one of the best places to go in August for solo travelers and culture lovers alike. Though it’s high season, this is when many locals leave town, so won’t feel like you’re not fighting the crowds.
The city is a vibrant place full of art, architecture, and all-night fiestas. For an unforgettable experience, catch a traditional Flamenco show at one of Barcelona’s historic tablaos.
And make sure you schedule some time to visit the Sagrada Família, Antoni Gaudí’s stunning and unfinished basilica.

August is peak season on the Italian coast, so expect crowds and high prices as both locals and international visitors flock to this iconic destination. But that also means you’ll have plenty of restaurants, shops, and activities to choose from.

Plus, if you’re looking for one of the cheapest places to travel in August, this is a good choice. That is, as long as you’re open to using Sri Lanka’s solid public transportation and staying at one of the amazing hostels!
Solo travelers looking for relaxed, beachy vibes should check out beach towns like Mirissa or Unawatuna. This is the place to find golden-sand beaches, great for swimming with sea turtles and relaxing on cabanas.
Sri Lanka is also one of the best countries to visit in Augustfor surfing. This time of year, head to Arugam Bay on the east coast, where you’ll find beaches with conditions for both beginner and avid surfers.
You’ll also want to explore the ancient ruins and mountain villages of inland Sri Lanka. Spend your days visiting historical sites like the rock fortress of Sigiriya, hiking through tea plantations, and exploring waterfalls.
